About the project
This living research archive explores Bharatanatyam as a cultural practice shaped by interpretation and lived experience.
Bringing together oral histories, a documented corpus of Sanskrit ślokas, and qualitative research, the project examines how Bharatanatyam moves across diasporic contexts, and how dancers navigate the relationship between inherited tradition and personal expression.
About the founder
Welcome! My name is Mihika Ramanan and I am a Bharatanatyam practitioner and student researcher deeply passionate about South Asian diaspora studies and cultural anthropology. My experience learning Bharatanatyam across different settings led to questions about how its cultural and philosophical meanings are taught and understood across different diaspora. Bharatanatyam in Motion is my way of sharing my knowledge with the world and giving back to this ever-evolving community.
