How is Bharatanatyam's cultural knowledge passed down, transformed across diaspora, and carried forward by the dancers who practice it across the world?

This ethnographic research study archive is a starting point for exploring this question. The project brings together three kinds of material: a structured collection of Sanskrit Bharatanatyam theoretical śloka recordings as the baseline for cultural adaptation, oral histories from Bharatanatyam practitioners and teachers, and a qualitative culmination of the study's findings in an ethnographic paper examining what these materials reveal about learning and sustaining the tradition.

Research by Mihika Ramanan, combining oral history, ethnographic fieldwork, and a documented corpus of Bharatanatyam practice across India and the South Asian diaspora.
